So - many people ask - - - Why Cow Island?
Well, other then being unique enough to diminish
other companies, there is a reason. Not a
particularly good one,
but a reason nonetheless.
On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, many of my
ancestors lived in
a small town. So small that if you leave the
main road, and travel the
11 miles to the town as posted on the road sign,
you will end your journey in the river.
A small peninsula branching off of the area is
known locally as Cow Island. (Not to be
confused with the legitimate Cow Island)
To the best of anyone’s recollection, there
has never been any large population of cows in
this area - free range or otherwise. The
nickname remains a puzzling, humorous conundrum,
at least to me.
